EJHL Champions set for final tryout camp
The Jersey Hitmen have announced their final evaluation camp dates
Wayne, NJ - The Jersey Hitmen are proud to announce that they have set the dates for their final 2008-2009 tryout camp. The camp will begin Wednesday, July 23rd at 5pm and end Thursday, July 24th at 7:30pm. The camp will feature three ice sessions and draw from all over the US, Canada and abroad. "In the past four seasons the Hitmen have taken over 25 players from our evaluation camps, and this season will be no different" commented coach Harris. "I am looking forward to watching some top-notch players at camp battling for a shot to defend the 2008 EJHL title this season in the Hitmen blue."
Hitmen capture EJHL spring classic
Jersey continues winning ways posting an undefeated 4-0 record
Haverhill, MA - Coming off the most successful season in franchise history, the Jersey Hitmen have continued to grow as an organization winning the 2nd annual EJHL spring classic this past weekend. Posting a 4-0 record in the tournament the Hitmen compiled some pretty gaudy stats scoring a tournament best 23 goals and giving up only 5 good for second in the tournament. The hitmen also boasted the top three scorers in the tournament lead by veteran Nick Geraci, newcomer Dan Monahan and linemate Ryan Cotcamp. Since the tournaments inception last spring the Hitmen have gone on to win the 2007 EJHL summer classic, the 2008 EJHL southern conference, 2008 EJHL league championship and the 2008 Gary Dineen Cup (EJHL playoff champions).
Hitmen U19 development coach, Mark Lotito, was behind the bench for the Hitmen victory and was very excited with the team's effort this weekend. "I am really proud at the way each and every one of these guys competed this weekend," commented coach Lotito. "There was great camaraderie amongst the forward lines, as each line chipped in offensively each day, and the defensive pairings really worked well together." Lotito went on to say, "our goaltending was fabulous and it was a pleasure coaching these guys. I really had a lot of fun this weekend."
With the Hitmen's final summer evaluation camp around the corner, July 23 and 24, the Hitmen look to build on this tournament victory in putting together another EJHL champion.
Craig soars to division one ranks
Hitmen leading scorer inks scholarship with Niagara
Wayne, NJ - After leading the Hitmen to the most successful season since their inception into the league in 2004, playoff MVP, Ryan Craig, has signed his letter of intent to attend Niagara University in the Fall of '08. In two seasons with the Hitmen, Craig finished both years as the top scorer on the team amassing an impressive 38-66-104 scoring line with 181 penalty minutes in 95 EJHL games. Craig was also voted as the 2nd star in back to back EJHL all-star games leading the southern conference to victories in the 2007 and 2008 games. "This is a great day for the EJHL, Craig family and Hitmen family," commented coach Harris. "Ryan is a special player and a special person, a true diamond in the rough. I had a chance to watch him play three years ago at TIER II nationals and was impressed with his play, although he was very rough around the edges. In two seasons with the Hitmen, Ryan has flourished into a division one player. He is tough, he can score goals, and he is an intense competitor, I am very proud of what he has become and where this opportunity will take him."
A native of Easton, Maryland, Ryan played his youth hockey with the Tri-City Eagles hockey association a small six team organization based out of Laurel, Maryland. "I did not know what I was going to do after my senior year in high school and my final year of midget, then coach Harris called me," said Craig. "He told me that he had seen me at nationals, along with Keith Sullivan (Phoenix Coyotes-NHL), and he wanted me to come play for him in a summer tournament. I did not know much about the EJHL but he had a lot of good things to say about the league, the level of play, the exposure, and most of all, great things to say about the Hitmen organization. I committed to play, and I guess you can say the rest is history."
Craig went on to say, "I am so happy I gambled on coach Harris and the Hitmen organization, it was the best hockey decision that I have ever made. The attention to detail in our training, the intense, high-tempo practices and the commitment that both coach Harris and Hunt make to each individual player really helped me as a player, and really bonds a team together. I am so happy to be joining Niagara, the campus was great, the facilities were excellent and I really liked the players on my visit." Craig finished with, "I also want to thank my parents for giving me this opportunity, and my teammates for this magical season, I will not disappoint you at the next level."
Craig becomes the 10th Hitman to matriculate to college next season, along with Kevin Clare who will be suiting up for the NTDP program in the fall of '08.
Hitmen nab post season awards
Craig and Harris earn EJHL honors
Wayne, NJ - The Jersey Hitmen are proud to announce that leading point getter, Ryan Craig, and first year head coach, Toby Harris, have received post season EJHL accolades. Ryan Craig was named 2008 EJHL play-off most valuable player and Coach Harris was recognized as the 2007-2008 EJHL coach of the year.
Craig, who finished the EJHL regular season 6th in EJHL scoring, continued his red hot play throughout playoffs notching 5 goals in 6 games leading the Hitmen to their first Gary Dineen Cup. "This is quite an honor," commented Craig. "I owe a lot of my success this season to my teammates, especially my linemates Josh Newberg and Cory Callen. This was a magical season and I am so happy that I got the chance from both Coach Harris and Coach Hunt to play in the EJHL. I have learned so much in my two seasons with the Hitmen and I look forward to what my hockey future holds." In two seasons with the Hitmen, Craig, has compiled some pretty impressive numbers [33-63-96-145PIM].
For first season head coach, Toby Harris, EJHL coach of the year comes unexpected. "When the season started all I was focused on was building a championship and building a 'team'," commented coach Harris. "The teams goals were my goals, and I put my heart and soul into making each one of these boys dreams come true." He went on to say," I owe this award to the 25 guys that competed hard each day in practice and worked hard to put the Hitmen on the map. I owe a lot to our GM Peter Masters for giving me this opportunity and coach Jim Hunt for his insights over the past four years. I also want to thank the coaches in the EJHL for recognizing their efforts and thank the league for this fine award."
Hitmen add new Junior team for 2008-2009

Himelson to Clarkson
EJHL top scoring defenseman to Potsdam in '09
Wayne, NJ - One of the most sought after players this past season in the EJHL, Andrew Himelson, has signed with Clarkson University for the fall of 2009. Himelson, who lead the EJHL in nearly every defensive category, finished the season with an impressive 20-46-66 scoring line. "Andrew is an incredible player and person," commented Coach Harris. "He is a coaches dream! Offensively gifted, defensively sound, extremely durable and very coachable. He plays in every situation, is a leader by example, and is very well liked in the locker room. Clarkson is getting an All-American caliber defenseman in Andrew."
A native of Monroe, NY, Himelson played his youth hockey for the Hudson Valley Polar Bears, and most recently the NJ Devils Youth U16 AAA team. "I really like what Clarkson had to offer," said Himelson. "Coach Roll, Houle and Dreschel really made me feel at home. I loved the facilities, I liked the cohesiveness in the locker room, and it reminded me a lot of the way we do things with the Hitmen. Clarkson is rich in hockey tradition and is a top level academic institution. I think it is a perfect fit for me and my family."
Himelson will arrive at Potsdam for the fall of 2009 where his cross town rival will be current Hitmen captain, Mark Armstrong, who recently signed with St. Lawrence University. The campuses are located within 10 miles of one another and is one of the most heated cross town rival in all of college sports dating back over 100 years.
Hitmen take first EJHL Playoff Championship
Weekend sweep bumps off the Monarchs
Worcester, MA - Mark Armstrong scored midway through the third period and Jon Morrow held off a late charge by the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs to capture their first EJHL Playoff Championship.
Click here for pictures of the championship team.
On Saturday, Cory Callen scored 7:09 into overtime to lead the Jersey Hitmen past the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs in game one of the EJHL Championship Series.
The game, which featured the 2007-08 EJHL Regular Season Co-Champions, certainly lived up to its billing. Both teams came out flying, hoping to gain the early edge. The Monarchs, however, struck less than two minutes into the game when Jimmy Gaudet sent Charlie Mullan and Kyle Mountain in on a 2-on-1. Mullan took the pass from Gaudet and skated in before hitting Mountain in the slot, and Mountain shot the puck past Hitmen goalie Jon Morrow.
Matt Amico tied the game seven minutes into the period when Nick Geraci picked up a loose puck along the boards and passed it toward the slot. The pass found Amico’s stick and Amico slid the puck past James Mello.
Amico put the Hitmen on top with 7:24 left in the period when Geraci again dug for the puck behind the net and found Mark Armstrong in the corner. Armstrong then passed to Amico, who skated around a defenseman and shot the puck past Mello.
Though defense ruled much of the second period, the Monarchs threw everything they had at the net, but to no avail. The Monarchs forwards peppered Morrow with shots early in the period, but the Hitmen goaltender would not yield. With the period winding down, Jeff Velleca was sent on a breakaway, but could not control the puck long enough to shoot it.
With 6:29 remaining in regulation, Graham Sisson sent the game into overtime when he received a pass from Lance Herrington at the goal line and beat Morrow on the far post. Yuri Bouharevich also assisted on the play.
The teams entered overtime ready to gain the upper hand in the series, but Morrow and Justin Gates would have none of it. With the Hitmen on the power play seven minutes into the extra session, Ryan Craig sent a centering pass to Cory Callen, and Callen poked in the game-winner.
Justin Gates finished the game with 31 saves, and Jon Morrow made 24 saves for the win.

Hitmen to face Monarchs for EJHL title
#1 seed looks to continue undefeated play-off run
Wayne, NJ - Crowned co-champions of the 2008 EJHL regular season with the NH Jr Monarchs, but gaining the EJHL #1 seed in the playoffs and upcoming Jr A nationals due to a 3-0 head to head record, the Hitmen are now set to face off with the northern division champions for the right to be called EJHL play-off champion.
The Hitmen who swept their way through the quarter finals (2-0 over the NE Jr Huskies) and semi finals (2-0 over the South Shore Kings) are the only EJHL team to go undefeated in the play-offs up to this point. This weekend they look to continue their winning ways against the defending EJHL champion.
"This weekend is going to be a battle," commented coach Harris. "The Monarchs are a very talented team. They have a top notch coaching staff, two division one goaltenders, and a slew of nifty players. We really look forward to the task at hand and relish the opportunity to compete against one of the league's perennial powers."
The Monarchs are coming off two hard earned series victories going to the third and deciding mini game in both series, outlasting the Bay State Breakers and Boston Jr Bruins, have earned their birth to the finals.
"The boys are in great spirits right now, but not satisified," said coach Harris. "Our practices have clean and crisp and the boys are hungry to attain another one of their pre-season goals."

Armstrong a Saint
Hitmen captain to don the scarlet and brown of St Lawrence in the fall
Wayne, NJ - The Jersey Hitmen are proud to announce their 6th college signing of the year as EJHL all-star and team captain, Mark Armstrong, has committed to St Lawrence University for the fall of '08. The hard nosed winger from Palm Harbor, Florida finished the season fourth on the Hitmen in powerplay goals, third in game winning goals, and tied for second in shorthanded goals.
"The Hitmen family is very excited for Mark today," commented coach Harris. "Mark has been with us for two years, he has been our captain for two seasons and has played a big part in the success of the team this season. Coming off knee surgery 'Army' worked hard to get himself back into shape losing 15 pounds over the summer and he has been a great leader both on and off the ice to each player in the room. He is an intense competitor and truly leads by example, I have no doubt that coach Joe Marsh will love what Mark brings to SLU."
Armstrong, who left the Green Bay Gamblers (USHL) in 2006 for the EJHL, has flourished in the east. "Playing division one hockey has always been a goal of mine," Armstrong stated. "I feel very fortunate to be a part of the St Lawrence hockey program and its rich history. I would like to thank my parents for making this possible. They stood behind me when I made the choice to come east, they supported me through the tough times and trusted that the Hitmen would help me achieve my life long dream of playing DI hockey."
Armstrong went on to say, "Coach Harris and coach Hunt have helped me immeasurably in my hockey development and maturity over the past 2 seasons, and I am so happy that I chose to come to the EJHL and the Hitmen."
Ruikka to Boston University
Hitmen defenseman to suit up for the Terriers in the fall
Wayne, NJ - The Jersey Hitmen are proud to announce that EJHL all-star defenseman, Ryan Ruikka, has accepted a scholarship to Boston University for the fall of '08. Ruikka, a native of Chelsea, Michigan, finished the season tied for 7th in EJHL defensive scoring with 30 points, but more importantly the defensive minded defenseman ended the regular season with a +35 rating.
"I thought BU was the right place for me, it just felt like home on my visit," commented Ruikka. "The opportunity was one that I could not pass up and I think it will be a great place for me. BU is an academically accredited school and has a great hockey program both of which I was looking for during my college search. I think I will fit well into the Terriers hockey program and hope to help them continue their success."
Ruikka went on to comment on the EJHL and the Hitmen, "I truly believe that coming out East to play in the EJHL was a great move for me. I got the opportunity to play and develop my skills. I also would not be where I am without my parents, who have given graciously to me and have supported me in everything I have done. I also want to thank them along with everyone back home who has taken a part of developing me and helping me move on to the next level. Lastly, I want to thank Coach Harris and Coach Hunt for believing in me and pushing me each day both on and off the ice. The value of training at a high level and being held accountable every time I stepped into the arena has afforded me the opportunity to play at BU."
Ryan will follow defenseman, Mike Hewkin (who played last season with the Hitmen and currently plays at Northeastern University) into Hockey East and the beanpot. "I was so happy for Mike last season when he made the move from the NAHL out to the Hitmen and was able to capture his DI hockey dream," commented coach Harris. "This season I feel the same elation as Ryan made the move from the USHL to the Hitmen and through our off ice training and college development theories in practice, along with the exposure that the EJHL affords the player, he was able to attain his dream. This is truly a great day for both the Ruikka family and the Hitmen organization alike, I know that Ryan will thrive under coach Parker, and develop into a fine young man."
Hitmen Clinch EJHL
southern division title
Wayne, NJ - For the first time in their
four year existence the Jersey Hitmen have clinched the EJHL
southern division crown. "I am so ecstatic right now,"
commented coach Harris on title. "The boys have worked so
hard all year for this. We have had awesome goaltending, the
defensive core has been nearly perfect game in and game out
and we have had four lines that compete hard every night and
chip in with timely scoring, so far it has been a recipe for
success."
The Hitmen currently sit one point out of the top spot in
the EJHL. With an overall record of 36-9-9 and a league
record of 26-7-7 the Hitmen have shattered their records
of past seasons. Coach Harris went on to say, "Over the
summer the staff went out and recruited in pieces. We took
those pieces and formulated lines and defensive pairings, we
watched to see what fit into the puzzle, and what didn't and
I think the staff and the players did a wonderful job of
playing to our strengths and attacking our weaknesses early
in the season."
One of the glaring changes this season from years past is
the players mindset and their team camaraderie, and one can
see that in the team stats. This season the Hitmen bolster a
line-up with 12 players over the 25 point mark, and 10 with
over ten goals, illustrating that throughout this season it
has truly been a team effort. The Hitmen also sit tops in
the league in powerplay percentage at 23% and penalty
killing percentage at 89%.
"Winning the southern division title is a great milestone,
but it is only one on the list of three that the team put
together at our first team meeting back in September," said
Coach Harris. "We still have two titles in our sights, the
EJHL crown and a national championship, and I know that are
boys are hungry to attain all the goals that they had set
back on day one."
Tufts calls on Amico
Hitmen forward to dawn the brown and blue
Wayne, NJ - The Jersey Hitmen are proud to
announce that forward Matt Amico is headed to Tufts
University for the fall of '08. Matt, who was part of a
midseason trade with the NE Jr Huskies, is a three year
veteran of the EJHL. "I knew Matt from his days with Andy
Heinz and the Valley Jr Warriors," commented coach Harris.
"After the Christmas break we were looking to solidify our
line-up with a fine skating, defensive minded forward that
was a great kid both on and off the ice, so I called Paul
Jenkins, and the rest is history."
The 5'11 185lb, Buffalo, NY native has fit in nicely with
the Hitmen posting a 6-8-14 scoring line in 24 games. "Matt
is very excited for this opportunity to play in the NESCAC
league and for the Tufts University Jumbos," said coach
Harris.
Amico is the fourth player from the Hitmen organization to
commit this season. Earlier in the season defenseman Bill
Day committed to West Point (Atlantic Hockey League-Div I),
closely followed by forwards Bryan Potacco (Bowling Green
University-CCHA Div I) and Will Peltz (Yale University-ECAC
Div I).
Hitmen all tied up
After tying their last
three at home the Hitmen sit one point out of EJHL top spot
Wayne, NJ - While padding their
nine point southern division lead with two points over the
weekend, the Hitmen have momentarily slid out of the EJHL top
spot on the heels of three home ties. "We have competed hard
through this tough stretch, and I have been impressed with our
relentlessness and perseverance, but we need to cash in on more
of our offensive chances," coach Harris commented after this
past weekend series with the second place Bridgewater Bandits.
"The Bandits are a very well coached and talented team, and to
put 108 shots up against such a strong team says something
about our brand of hockey. However, to only score 4 times, that
points out where we are falling short as a team."
With just five games to play in the season, the Hitmen sit just
one point out of the EJHL top spot, behind a surging NH Monarchs
team and the Syracuse Stars. Coach Harris commented on the
upcoming Hitmen schedule, "I look forward to the challenges
ahead. We play five southern division games to finish out the
season, all with playoff implications, so we will need to be at
our best to win the league. This is a spot that I know each
player on this team will relish as we do not take short cuts."
This weekend the Hitmen will travel to Foxboro for the first
annual South Shore Kings showcase where Sunday at 2 pm they will
face off against the Bay State Breakers and look to sweep the
season series. On Monday at 9 am the Hitmen will line up against
the host South Shore Kings, and they will look to revenge a 4-2
loss at the hands of the Kings two weeks ago.
Hitmen shine in all-star
classic
Effinger and Craig lead fine showing by Hitmen
Hooksett, NH - On Monday, January 21st the
first place Hitmen sent 8 players to the EJHL all-star classic
in Hooksett, NH. Eddie Effinger, Garet Chumley, Ryan Craig, Ryan
Ruikka, Andrew Himelson, Jon Morrow and Jonathan Lee all
represented the EJHL southern division all-stars in the 5-2
southern division win. In the victory, Eddie Effinger was named
#1 star for his 2 goal, 1 assist effort and Ryan Craig was
honored with the #2 star for his 3 assist effort.
After the game southern division coach Toby Harris said, "I was
so proud of the boys today. They played hard, and each one of
them was impressive in the win." He went on to say, "I spoke
with many NHL, DI and DIII coaches after the game and they all
commented on how hard the boys competed and how impressed they
were with the way the boys approached the game. These 8 opened a
lot of eyes today individually and really made the organization
proud."
Hitmen captain, Mark Armstrong had a strong game finishing with
one assist and Hitmen goaltenders, Jon Morrow (credited with the
win and 16 saves) and Jonathan Lee (0 goals against on 8 shots)
also played very well. Defensive partners, Ryan Ruikka and
Andrew Himelson, stood out in the scouts eyes with their
impressive skill sets and tremendous skating.
Hitmen tame Falcons and Huskies
in weekend sweep
Hitmen extend lead in southern conference with
four point weekend
West Springfield, MA - This past weekend
the Hitmen packed up and headed north once again for a two game set with
the NE Jr Falcons and the NE Jr Huskies. With both the Falcons and
Huskies respectively battling for play-off spots the Hitmen knew that
this weekend set would not be an easy one.
On Saturday night, the Hitmen faced off against southern
division foe, the NE Jr Falcons at the Olympia Arenas in West
Springfield, MA. From the drop of the puck, the Hitmen dictated play
peppering the Falcons goaltender with 9 straight shots, but at the 4:14
point off an errant rebound from a weak point shot, the Falcons would go
up, 1-0. This goal seemed to infuriate the Hitmen as they would rattle
off three straight goals in a four minute stretch compliments of Mike
Muhs (on the powerplay) and two by Garet Chumley. With a two goal lead
and a 17-8 shot edge entering the second, it looked as if the Hitmen
were in control, but that would all change as the officiating would take
over. At the :48 second mark of the second period Ryan Craig would get
whistled off for a two minute minor, and then get a ten minute
misconduct tacked on, from this point the Hitmen would get charged with
eight straight penalties. With each call being more outrageous than the
first, the Hitmen would battle down a man or two for over 6 minutes
until the Falcons (on a 5 on 3 advantage) finally lit the lamp to cut
the lead to 3-2. After killing off the remaining penalties the Hitmen
would go back to work and Bill Day would score on a highlight wrap
around, to put the Hitmen back up by two goals heading into the third
period.
At the start of the 3rd, once again on the powerplay, the
Falcons would score to cut the Hitmen lead to one again, but that would
be all as the Hitmen batted down the hatches, and added an insurance
goal late as team leading scorer, Ryan Craig, would hit the empty net to
put the game away. After the game coach Harris commented, "I have never
seen anything like the officiating that I saw tonight. Good refs are
never seen in a hockey game, pompous refs think that the parents and
scouts are their to watch them, we all know what kind of official we had
tonight." He went on to say, "I was impressed with the way the boys
stayed together amidst the awful officiating, and battled through it for
a tough two points. The Falcons are a well coached, gritty team, and
taking two points from these guys is always an accomplishment."
On Sunday night the Hitmen traveled from Springfield,
north to Tyngsboro, to face the northern division, NE Jr Huskies at the
Skate 3 arena. Known as one of the toughest venues in the league to win
at, the Hitmen knew that they would be in for a battle, and a battle
they got.
Beginning the game in the same manner, as they did against the Falcons
just 24 hours earlier, the Hitmen dictated play until the 1:24 mark when
rookie, Kevin Clare, would notch his second career EJHL goal in as many
games to put the Hitmen up, 1-0. From that point on the action would be
fast, and end to end, until the 14:10 mark when the Huskies would get on
the board on a nice passing play to even the score at one entering the
intermission. The second period started like the first, but the first
tally would be credited to the home team, as 4 minutes into the second
the Huskies would break through and go up, 2-1 on a broken play in front
of the Hitmen net. This goal seemed to ignite the Huskies as just 2
minutes later, shorthanded, the Huskies extended their lead cashing in
on a 2 on 1 passing play, but that would not be it for the Hitmen. Down,
3-1, the Hitmen would once again show their resiliency, as they would
rattle off three straight powerplay goals, by newcomer, Matt Amico, all
star defenseman, Ryan Ruikka, and offensive dynamo, Corey Callen, to put
the Hitmen up 4-3 with 13 minutes to play. It looked as if the momentum
had shifted, and just 3 minutes later, Kevin Clare would back up that
premise as he would knotch his second of the game on an awesome
breakaway move, to put the Hitmen up 5-3, and it looked as if the final
nail had been put in the coffin with 10 minutes to play. This was not
the case as with just 1:26 left on the clock, the Huskies would come
back and cut the lead to one capitalizing on a failed clearing attempt
and with 1 minute left they would pull their goaltender for the extra
attacker. With the 6 on 5 advantage, and just :48 seconds remaining, the
Huskies would tie the game on a nice snap shot from the high slot to
send the game to overtime. With the momentum now shifting back in the
Huskies advantage the Hitmen looked all but out of it until with just
under one minute remaining, Matt Amico picked off a clearing attempt,
found Andrew Himelson streaking in from the point, and Himelson snapped
a shot under the Huskie goaltenders arm to win the game in overitime,
6-5.
"That was quite a victory," commented
coach Harris. "I have never seen a game with so many momentum changes.
Shorthanded goals, powerplay goals, 6 on 5 goals, overtime goals, this
game had it all." He went on to say, "I am so proud of how we battled
tonight. We played with passion, we were resilient, we really played
together as a team, this was a hard fought two points."
Hitmen plant Shamrocks
Powerplay hits at 50% in weekend sweep
Wayne, NJ - After dropping a southern division game
Tuesday on Long Island, the Hitmen were back at it with a two game set
against the feisty, Boston Jr Shamrocks. The weekend set would come
quickly on the heels of four games in seven days, compiled with the
Hitmen coming off a 17 day Christmas break, the quick turn around would
test the first place Hitmen.
On Saturday, the Hitmen would take the ice looking to extend their lead
in the EJHL standings, and from the drop of the puck it looked as if
this would not be that tall an order. Just 4 minutes into the first,
veteran Tyler Savage would notch his third of the season with assists
going to Tucker Callen and Will Frederick. Just three minutes later,
Corey Callen would light the lamp for his 12th of the season to extend
the lead, but that two goal lead was short lived as the Shamrocks
battled back and scored on only their second shot cutting the lead in
half. This goal at 13:23 would set off an explosion as at 14:13 Eddie
Effinger would tickle the twine, and at 14:37, on the powerplay, Tucker
Callen would put the Hitmen up, 4-1. It looked as if the flood gates
were beginning to open, but they were quickly shut as the Shamrocks
battled back scoring with just :57 seconds remaining to cut the lead
again, 4-2.
In the second period, the Shamrocks came out buzzing and at the 10:02
mark, Josh Mandic, scored on the powerplay to slice the lead to one,
4-3, but the Hitmen would not wilt, as the Hitmen go-to-guy, Ryan Craig
would put the Hitmen up to stay as he would score his 19th on season,
with assists going to Josh Stone and Kevin Clare. As the game progressed
the Hitmen and Shamrocks once again would trade punches with Ryan Ruikka
icing the win with an empty net goal, as the Hitmen would skate to the
6-4 victory. After the game, coach Harris commented, "the Shamrocks
really battled hard tonight, and despite some mental breakdowns, we were
equal to the task." He went on to say, "I thought the line of Tucker
Callen, Savage and Frederick was great tonight. Every time they hit the
ice they made something happen (scoring twice). They were high energy,
finished checks, and was the lynch pin in the victory."
On Sunday the Hitmen looked to rebound with a sweep and although the
game started somewhat the same, the Hitmen flipped the script from
Saturday. Like game one, the Hitmen started strong as Josh Newberg
scored in his first two shifts to put the Hitmen up, 2-0, but unlike
Saturday the Hitmen did not stop there. The Newberg back to back goals
were then followed by Kevin Clare's first goal as Hitman, then just :28
seconds later in his third shift, Newberg completed the natural hat
trick, putting the Hitmen up 4-0 and they would not look back. After a
Shamrock goal at the 17 minute mark the Hitmen would score 7 unanswered
goals to run away with it, 11-1. On the day the Hitmen also got goals
from Himelson, Lampson, Conte, Chumley, Day and two from Eddie Effinger.
"I was very impressed today with our team's hunger around the net and
ability to finish," commented coach Harris. "We had been struggling a
bit on the powerplay, worked on it hard in the short week, and it
definitely paid dividends today."
On the day, the Hitmen went 7 for 11 with the extra attacker, raising
their powerplay percentage to an impressive 22.44% good for 1st in
powerplay efficiency in the EJHL. For their strong play on the powerplay,
and throughout the weekend, Eddie Effinger (Offensive POTW) and Andrew
Himelson (Defensive POTW) were recognized as the EJHL offensive and
defensive players of the week. Effinger finished the weekend with a
3-2-5 line and Himelson was equally impressive with a 1-3-4 +8 rating
weekend.
Hitmen send eight to
EJHL all-star classic
Southern division starting line-up all
Hitmen
Wayne, NJ - The Jersey Hitmen hockey
club is proud to announce that they will be sending eight players to
EJHL all-star classic. The classic will be held at the Tri-Town arena in
Hooksett, NH, Monday January 21st at 1:30pm. Out of the eight Hitmen, an
unprecedented six will be starting for the southern division team.
"I am so happy for each one of these guys, they all have
worked so hard, and deserve this very prestigious accolade," commented
southern division all-star coach, Toby Harris. "They have all brought
something different to the success of the Hitmen this season, and I
believe that they will undoubtedly impress on Monday."
At forward, the Hitmen will send team leading scorer and
the six leading scorer in the league, Ryan Craig, who will dawn the EJHL
all-star jersey for the second year in a row. Along with Craig, will be
#17 on the EJHL top scorers list, Garet Chumley from Cambridge, MN and
line mate, Eddie Effinger, who has been selected twice as EJHL offensive
player of the week. Rounding out the forwards is second year captain
Mark Armstrong, who is 3rd on the Hitmen with goals scored at 11.
On the back end, the Hitmen will send the EJHL top goal
scoring defenseman, and EJHL defensive player of the week, Andrew
Himelson. Himelson will be joined by his 'D' partner, and division one
recruit, Ryan Ruikka, Ruikka currently sits at #7 in EJHL defensive
scoring. To round out the selections, the Hitmen will send both of their
goaltenders, Jon Morrow and Jonathan Lee. Morrow is currently tops in
the EJHL with 14 wins and Lee is tied for first in EJHL shut-outs with
three.

Hitmen mop up at inagural
EJHL Winter Showcase
Hitmen outscore opponents 12-4 in three victories
Marlboro, MA - Coming off a 17
day break coach Harris was leery of the team picking up where
they had left off, however true to form the Hitmen did not
disappoint. In the first ever EJHL/AJHL Winter Showcase the
Hitmen took care of the competition disposing of the AJHL
Washington Jr Nationals (3-1), the AJHL Philadelphia Jr Flyers
(5-1) and league foe Valley Jr Warriors (4-2) to improve their
overall record to an impressive, 31-6-6.
"I was quite pleased with our effort against Washington fresh
off the break," commented coach Harris. "Anytime you take a long
break and are without ice and competition on a regular basis
conditioning and timing are always a big question mark, but all
my questions were answered against the Nationals."
In the 3-1 victory, the Hitmen outshot Washington, 32-9, and
dictated play most of the night. The bright note on the night
was that the Hitmen got scoring from three out of four of the
lines, as Hitmen newcomer, Josh Stone, netted his first goal as
a Hitman with assists going to linemates, Matt Amico and Tucker
Callen. Stone's goal was then followed by a Cory Callen tally,
with assists going to Craig and Newberg, and Nick Lampson ended
the scoring at the :26 second mark of the final stanza, assists
going to Chmley and Effinger. Jon Lee, who was not tested a lot,
kicked out 8 saves in the victory.
On Saturday the Hitmen faced-off against another girtty AJHL
opponent in the Philadelphia Jr Flyers. "I knew Philly was going
to compete hard," said coach Harris. "We played them two years
ago in the Mercyherst showcase and they never stopped skating,
it was the kind of game that you look for off of break to rally
the troops."
From the drop of the puck it was a very physical game, with both
teams competing hard until the Hitmen broke through at the 9:45
mark as captain Mark Armstrong netted his 17th goal of the
season. The next twelve to thirteen minutes of the contest the
action was fast and furious until the Hitmen broke through
again, and in fine fashion, scoring twice in a :57 second span.
At the 22:11 mark, Garet Chumley notched the second Hitmen goal
on a nice centering pass from Eddie Effinger, and just under a
minute later Josh Newberg would score a classic, blue collar
Newberg goal as he would redirect a centering pass from Corey
Callen through the Flyer goaltender to put the Hitmen up,
3-0. In the second half, the Flyers would try to mount a
comeback scoring just :26 seconds into the period, but from
there on in, Jon Morrow would shut the door kicking out 21
Philadelphia shots in the victory. The Hitmen would add two more
goals late, one off the stick of Tucker Callen, and the second
would be Josh Newberg's second of the game, and his first
shorthanded goal of the season, and the Hitmen would roll to
victory 5-1.
In game three, it was back to EJHL play, as the Hitmen would
battle EJHL northern division foe, the Valley Jr Warriors. The
Warriors, coming off victories against the Bridgewater Bandits
and Boston Jr Bulldogs, were rearing to go. From the drop of the
puck the Hitmen dominated play peppering the Warriors net, and
that play paid off as just 1:43 into the contest, Mike Muhs
would notch his 4th of the season to put the Hitmen up, 1-0.
Building off the early goal, and momentum, just 3 shifts later,
Muhs' linemate, Nick Geraci would tally his 9th of the year off
a nice passing play from Armstrong to Muhs and Geraci would
finish upstairs to extend the lead, 2-0. After the early
onslaught, and the Hitmen ringing a couple of posts, Valley
would settle down the troops until the 20:15 mark when defensive
dynamo, Ryan Ruikka, would sneak in from the point and score his
3rd of the season to widen the Hitmen lead going into break,
3-0. After the 15 minute break, and some choice words from their
head coach, Valley roared back. Just 1:03 into the second half
Valley would knotch their first goal, on their 7th shot, and
began to mount a comeback. As the Hitmen tried to settle the
ship, the Warriors would break through again at the 8 minute
mark on the powerplay, cutting the Hitmen lead to 3-2, but
Jersey would not give in, and behind some huge saves from Jon
Morrow, the Hitmen would skate to a 4-2 victory.
"You never like to see a let down like we had the first 10
minutes of the second half, but behind some spectacular saves
from Jon Morrow we were able to bend back not break, and gut out
a very important two league points," said coach Harris after the
game.
For his outstanding play on the weekend Jon Morrow was honored
by the EJHL with his 2nd Defensive Player of the week honor. On
the weekend Morrow posted some amazing stats with a 1.50 GAA and
a .923 save percentage. This comes on the heels of two other
Hitmen securing the EJHL honors prior to break, for the week of
12/21/06, Bill Day (Defensive Player of the week) and Michael
O'Brien (Rookie of the week) were recognized. Please visit

Hitmen break for the
holidays atop the EJHL
Wayne, NJ - After taking 3 of 4
points from a pesky Capital District squad over the weekend the
Jersey Hitmen head into the holiday break leading the EJHL. With
44 points, the Hitmen are the top team overall. Jersey leads the
league in wins (20), home wins (14) winning percentage (.786),
powerplay percentage (21.14%) and penalty killing percentage
(90.56%).
"It's been a magical season thus far, but our
work is far from done," commented head coach Toby Harris. "I
respect each and every one of these guys so much for the hard
work and dedication that they individually put into 'their'
games and 'their' bodies over the summer. Nearly every player
came to camp in shape, ready to compete and gelled nicely. We
have a very tight knit locker room that comes to play each night
for one another, it has been a pleasure to work with each and
every one of them so far, and I look forward to big things from
these guys down the home stretch."
With 17 league games (11 road and 6 home)
remaining the Hitmen have set their team goals high. "Our team
goals prior to the season were to win the league and to win the
tier III Jr A national tournament," said coach Harris. "I am
pleased with where we sit now, but understand that we have to
continue to improve to attain these lofty goals. I think our
boys understand this, and they have not rested on their morals
up to this point. Our on ice sessions and weight room sessions
have been vigorous, but I truly believe that all the hard work
and sweat that each of these guys have put in will pay off down
the road."
The Hitmen have been successful behind very
strong goaltending, a strong core of mobile defenseman and a
dynamic mix forwards. In goal, Jon Morrow and Jonathan Lee have
been stellar both sitting in the top 10 in EJHL goaltending
stats. Defensively, Andrew Himelson and Ryan Ruikka have lead
the way, as Himelson sits first in league goal scoring with 9
goals. West point recruit, Bill Day, and DI prospect Kevin Clare
have also pitched in with timely scoring and great defensive
play. Veteran rearguards, Michael O'Brien and David Conte have
been very steady all season, and newcomer, Kris Massaro, has
brought a very imposing, physical presence to the defense.
Up front, the Hitmen have been lead by veteran, Ryan Craig.
Craig, who was 1st star in the 2007 EJHL all-star game, has
picked up where he left off last season leading the Hitmen in
scoring with a 12-21-33 line which is good for 7th in EJHL
scoring. Craig is joined by a load of talent up front with seven
other Hitmen over 20 points in EJHL play. Those players are
newcomers Garet Chumley (28 points), Eddie Effinger (23 points)
and Nick Lampson (23 points). Also eclipsing the 20 point mark
are second year Hitmen Cory Callen (29 points), Josh Newberg (25
points) and captain Mark Armstrong (22 points). Coach Harris is
very happy with the offense saying, "the thing that excites me
most about our forwards is that on any given night a new hero
emerges. At the beginning of the year the Chumley, Effinger,
Lampson line was on fire, but as they cooled Craig, Newberg, and
Cory Callen picked up the slack." Harris went on, "then the
Newberg line hit some tough times and the Armstrong, Muhs,
Geraci line combined for 24 points in a four game stretch. With
everyone chipping in, it is going to be scary when all four
lines are firing."
Harris also commented on the intangibles that Tucker Callen,
Kevin Miller, Tyler Savage and Will Frederick have brought to
the rink. "Tucker has really filled a very important role that
we had missed in the past, and that is one of a 'leader by
example.' Tucker, along with Miller, Frederick and Savage bring
it every night that they suit up, and their competitive natures
have pushed the guys in front of them to become better. These
guys are invaluable to the Hitmen and our culture."
The Hitmen return back to action on January 4th as they will
face off in the EJHL/AJHL shoot-out at the New England Sports
Center in Marlboro, MA.
Newberg honored by EJHL
Hard nosed center earns offensive player of the week
Wayne, NJ - This past weekend the Hitmen went 2-1 in the Jr
Huskies classic, and Josh Newberg was a driving force despite
being stricken by the flu. Newberg, who is currently tied for
3rd in team scoring and tied for 20th in
EJHL scoring, lit the lamp in all three showcase games including
the game winner in the 6-5 victory over the host Huskies.
"Josh is a man of few words, he lets his game do the talking,"
said coach Harris. "Josh has been with us now for three seasons
and it is amazing how he has worked to transform his game on
both ends of the ice. He competes harder than anyone in the
league, both on and off the ice, and will do anything for a
teammate. I know Josh will go far in this game, and be a major
asset to any college program."
On the season Newberg has compiled some pretty impressive
numbers. In 38 games Josh has a line of 15-23-38, with a +7
rating, 5 powerplay goals, and 5 game winning goals. The son of
Mr and Mrs Robert Newberg, the Westfield, NJ native has garnered
much college interest this season.
Hitmen gear up for
Selects
Jersey sits atop the EJHL with 41 points
Wayne, NJ - Leaving the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg, MA
this past weekend with 4 points, the Hitmen sat atop the EJHL
and the southern division by three points. Coach Harris
commented on the weekend, "I was happy with the boys performance
this weekend. We competed hard, we battled back from some early
deficits, and had a chance to win on Sunday, but fell short.
Right now the only thing that we are focused on is the next task
at hand, and that is preparing to beat a well coached Capital
District team."
At the Huskies showcase in Fitchburg the Hitmen went 2-1 and
secured four out of six possible points. On Friday afternoon the
Hitmen gained two large southern division points beating a game
Bay State Breakers team, 5-3. Despite getting down early, 2-0,
the Hitmen came storming back in the second half scoring 5
unanswered goals by five different Hitmen. Eddie Effinger
started the scoring, and he was followed by Newberg, O'Brien,
Armstrong and Chumley, and Jon Morrow stood tall in net kicking
out 14 Bay State shots for the victory.
On Saturday the Hitmen faced off against the host NE Jr Huskies
and was this a roller coaster of a ride as there would be 4 lead
changes, 11 goals scored, and an unconfirmed EJHL record. The
Huskies would start the scoring on the first shift of the game,
to once again put the Hitmen in an early hole, but the Hitmen
would not go quietly as 7 minutes later Tucker Callen would knot
the game at one. However, just 2 minutes later the Huskies would
go back up on top, only to relinquish that lead at the 19:02
mark as Ryan Craig would score his team leading 12th goal. The
teams would head into intermission tied at two, but the
fireworks were about to be set off.
Once again the Hitmen would be caught sleeping in the first
shift of the period as just :42 seconds in, the Huskies would
strike to go up again, 3-2, but the lead would not last long.
Just :21 seconds later Corey Callen would tickle the twine,
followed by brother Tucker, and veteran Kevin Miller, all three
goals happening in a unofficial EJHL record :27 seconds, and
putting the Hitmen up 5-3, but the fanfare would not stop. After
a Huskies time out, the home team managed to score twice in a 10
minute span to tie the game up with only five minutes remaining,
but in step EJHL player of the week, Josh Newberg. Newberg would
strike with just 3 minutes remaining to put the final nail into
the coffin, as the Hitmen escaped, 6-5.
The Sunday finale would pit the first place Hitmen against the
second place Bandits in an early, 7:40am affair, and it would
not be pretty. Coming off of two hard fought games the Hitmen
wiped the sleep out of their eyes, but could not beat
Bridgewater goalie, Ross MacKinnon on their chances, dropping
the final game, 4-1. After the game coach Harris commented, "we
had a chance to win today, but did not deserve to win. We lost
precious puck battles along the boards, and in front of our net,
that resulted in goals against. When we had chances to bounce
back Mackinnon was equal to the task, the bottom line is that
the Bandits just executed their game plan better."
Currently the Hitmen sit 3 points clear of Bridgewater with 3
games in hand heading into the weekend series with the Capital
District Selects at home. The Hitmen will face off against the
Selects Saturday night at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm
both games will be played at the Ice Vault.
Hitmen dispose of South Kent
4-0
Morrow and Lee combine for 19 save shut-out
West Point, NY - Coming off a lengthy twelve day
holiday break, and on an incredible 11 game unbeaten streak, the
Hitmen traveled to West Point for a rear mid season exhibition game
against perennial prep power South Kent.
"I thought this game would be a great opportunity for us to shake
off some rust after the break," commented coach Harris. "Geoff
Maratolo (South Kent head coach) and I worked a camp together this
past summer, became close, and thought that this game would be a
great opportunity for both teams. With us coming off break, and
South Kent just stepping on the ice for the beginning of their
season it made a lot of sense."
From the drop of the puck it was evident that the Hitmen had been in
mid season form as they dictated play, but a feisty South Kent squad
really competed hard finishing checks and forcing the Hitmen to make
plays. At the twenty minute mark of the first half, Garet Chumley
struck on the power play, as he collected a rebound off the Ryan
Ruikka one-timer to put the Hitmen up, 1-0. Despite a penalty
riddled first stanza, as the Hitmen found themselves shorthanded for
over 12 minutes, Jon Morrow stood tall in net kicking out all 14
shots that the Cardinals mustered. The period ended, 1-0, as the
Hitmen weathered the storm, and shook off the rust.
The second half was a different game as the Hitmen found their legs
and South Kent struggled in only their 7th period of the season.
This was evident as the Hitmen struck three times in the 25 minute
span. The steaming hot Muhs line clicked for back to back goals, and
Eddie Effinger notched a power play goal to put the game out of
reach as the Hitmen cruised to a 4-0 win.
After the game coach Harris commented on the Hitmen win, "once again
I was very impressed with the play of Muhs and Armstrong. Since
acquiring Mike we have become a very strong 4 line team, and he has
helped in the reemergence of Mark Armstrong offensively." Harris
went on to say, "our goaltending was once again stellar and as usual
the line of effinger, chumley and lampson quietly went about their
business notching the game winner, and the insurance goal, I was
very happy with how the team responded in the second half after a
slow start."
The Hitmen travel to Syracuse this weekend for a huge EJHL
north-south weekend series as the battle for first place in the
league is renewed. Earlier in the season the Hitmen and Stars skated
to a 3-3 tie at the NH Jr Monarchs tournament, as Syracuse scored
with merely :6 seconds remaining. "We are looking for a little
revenge," commented Hitmen goaltender Jon Morrow.
Armstrong honored as
EJHL player of the week
Captain has strong showing at Valley Showcase
Wayne, NJ - Coming off knee surgery Mark Armstrong
has something to prove both to himself and the EJHL. Armstrong came
to the Hitmen last season after becoming a top 3 pick in the USHL,
started strongly, but was sidelined for most of the season with an
ACL injury that required surgery. In the off season Armstrong rehab
intensely, dropped 15 lbs, and came into the 07-08 season on a
mission. This past weekend Armstrong's hard work paid off as he was
honored by the EJHL with offensive player of the week honors.
The team captain from Palm Harbor, Florida exploded for 4 goals
(including two on the powerplay, and a game winner), 4 assists and
an outstanding +6 rating leading the first place Hitmen to a 2-0-1
weekend record. "I am so happy for Mark," commented coach Harris.
"There was a list of DIII schools that wanted Mark after last season
but he came to the coaching staff in mid January, and told us that
he was going to sacrifice his season for surgery, so come back for
his final year in the best shape of his life and lead the Hitmen to
a championship!" Harris went on to say, "many times in this game
talk is cheap but Mark put in the time, hard work, and has thusfar
lived up to the first half of his bargain and I tip my hat to him."
Armstrong has not disappointed as the Hitmen are 21-3-2 over their
last 26 games and currently sit first in the EJHL with wins (14),
points (31), powerplay percentage (24%), and penalty kill percentage
(93%).
Lee - EJHL Defensive player
of the Week
Goaltender earns league honors after NH
Monarch sweep
Wayne, NJ - After the biggest sweep
in team history, as the Hitmen swept the NH Monarchs at Quinnipiac,
goaltender Jonathan Lee earns defensive player of the week honors.
In the two weekend victories Lee kicked out 79 of 80 shots in the
two victories, 5-0 and 3-1.
"Jonathan is quite a competitor," commented coach
Harris. "He started the season slowly but never gave up, he worked
his way into the starting line-up and has not looked back." Lee
currently sits in second place in EJHL goaltending stats with a 1.99
GAA and a .920 save %. He also is tied for the league lead in
shut-outs with two in just eight games, and also recorded an assist
last weekend.
Hailing from Monterey, California, Lee
is a tremendous student graduating Phillips Exeter Academy with a
3.7 GPA and he has a 1960 on his SAT's.
Morrow honored by the EJHL
Hitmen goaltender earns player of the week honors
Wayne, NJ - Strong goaltending is a cornerstone of
every championship team, and Jon Morrow has been outstanding this
season. Last weekend Morrow lead the Hitmen to a sweep of the NE Jr
Falcons kicking out 78 of 82 shots and earning his first shut out of
the season. These two stellar performances earned Morrow the EJHL
defensive player of the week honor.
The Romeo, MI native currently sits at the top of the league in
wins, minutes played and saves, and is in the top five in goals
against average, save percentage and shut-outs. "Jon has been a
steadying force for us all season," commented coach Harris. "He is
an extremely athletic goaltender with great instincts, and competes
as hard as any player on the team, we are lucky to have a goaltender
of his ability between the pipes."
Jon and the Hitmen will travel to Haverhill this weekend for the
Valley Jr Warriors annual EJHL showcase.
Hitmen ground Falcons
Weekend sweep vaults Hitmen into 1st place
Wayne, NJ - After polishing off the Apple Core on
Wednesday, the Hitmen had a quick turn around, facing off against
southern division foe, the NE Jr Falcons. The Falcons who came in on
a bit of a skid found no love at the Vault dropping two to the home
team, 3-0 and 5-1. (story to follow)
Hitmen take a bite out of the
Core
Lampson, Himelson and Ruikka lead Hitmen to victory
Wayne, NJ - In a rear mid week game the Jersey
Hitmen faced off against division rivals Apple Core on Wednesday
night. With both teams deadlocked in third place with 16 points it
was sure to be quite a battle. The Hitmen coming off a strong
showing against Northwood Prep, winning 4-3 despite outshooting the
prep team 36-11, were eager to avenge an earlier season loss to the
Core.
The Hitmen started earlier, and scored often, as just :19 seconds
into play Garet Chumley continued his hot play intercepting a
goaltender clearing effort and sliding the puck behind the Apple
Core goaltender to put the Hitmen up 1-0. This was a lead that the
Hitmen would never relinquish as just minutes later, the
Chumley-Effinger-Lampson line would strike again. At the 7:17 mark
Nick Lampson would score his second of the season in as many games
on a nice passing play from Effinger and Chumley to put the home
team up 2-0, but they were not done. Just 3 minutes later Effinger
would take his turn redirecting a Lampson pass the Apple Core
goaltender to put the Chumley-Effinger-Lampson line, and the Hitmen,
up 3-0. At this point Apple Core coach, Henry Lazar, would use his
timeout and pull their goaltender looking for a spark, to no avail,
as the Hitmen finished the first stanza outshooting the Core, 22-8,
dominating play.
The second period would start differently than the first as Apple
Core hit the ice after a reaming from their head coach, and cut the
lead to 3-1 just 2 minutes in. This would not slow down the Hitmen
as newcomer, Mike Muhs, would extend the lead back to three on a
nifty tip in front of the net on a cannon from Mark Armstrong. With
the period coming to a close, the Hitmen would strike again, this
time on the powerplay, as EJHL rookie of the week, Andrew Himelson
would snap a pass over to Ryan Ruikka who in turn snapped a hard
shot to the net that, like Muhs' goal, was redirected nicely passed
a beaten Core goaltender by Nick Lampson. His second of the night
would put the Hitmen up 5-1, and they would not look back.
In the final period the hard battling Apple Core team continued to
compete and at one time cut the Hitmen lead to 5-3, but the comeback
was thwarted by rookie of the year candidate, Andrew Himelson, who
notched his 7th of the season at 17:43 to put the game away.
"I thought our passion, our preparedness, and some very special
efforts from a lot of guys contributed to a huge win," commented
coach Harris. "We competed hard, and I think the shot total shows
that (57-30), but we got some big time saves from Jon Morrow, to put
away a very game Apple Core team." Harris went on to say, "we have
two huge games this weekend, and now that these two points are in
the book, it is time to prepare for our next competitor, the New
England Falcons."
The Hitmen will face off against the Falcons at home this weekend,
Friday night at 7pm and Saturday morning at 9:15am. Please visit
www.icevault.com for details
as the Hitmen will be holding their annual Skate with the
Hitmen Saturday morning after the game.
Chumley and
Himelson honored
Hitmen teammates earn EJHL player of the week accolades
Wayne, NJ - After leading the charge in a
weekend sweep of division foes, the Bay State Breakers, Garet
Chumley and Andrew Himelson were recognized by the league for
their outstanding play. Chumley was honored with EJHL Rookie of
the Week honors as he scored 2 powerplay goals and added four
assists for a 6 point weekend. "I have been very happy with
Garet's play so far this season," coach Harris commented. "He
has been a great player, he has worked hard both on and off the
ice, and most importantly he has been a great person and is very
well liked in the locker room." Currently Chumley sits fifth in
EJHL scoring (6-7-13) and has garnered much interest from
division one schools.
Andrew Himelson has been a very pleasant surprise for the Hitmen
this season. A product of the NJ Devils midget AAA program,
Himelson has performed magnificently for the Hitmen. This past
weekend Himelson earned EJHL Defensive Player of the Week honors
as he lit up the Bay State goaltenders for 3 powerplay goals and
added an assist along with a +4 rating on the weekend. "Andrew
has been a steadying force on the back end for us this season,"
said coach Harris. "He is playing like a veteran back there, and
the confidence that the coaching staff has in Andrew is
immeasurable." Himelson currently sits in second place in EJHL
defensive scoring, first in goals (4) and first in powerplay
goals (4).
Hitmen sweep Breakers
and remain undefeated
Jersey entrenched in first place after second consecutive home
sweep
Wayne, NJ - After completing their first home sweep
in two years, the Hitmen continued to make franchise history
registering their first ever back to back sweeps. Along with the
'sweeps' came 8 big southern division points to leave the Hitmen and
Syracuse as the only two EJHL teams still undefeated in EJHL league
play. The Hitmen continued their winning ways behind great
goaltending, timely scoring and tremendous play from the Jersey
rearguard.
On Saturday night, the Hitmen came out flying and took care of
business right off the bat scoring 3 times on the powerplay and
adding to more even strength goals to go up 5-1. Halfway through the
second period it looked as if the Hitmen were poised to give the
Breakers a white washing, but to their credit, the Breakers battled
back and with 3 powerplay goals of their own, cut the Hitmen lead to
just, 5-4. This was the wake up call the Hitmen needed as they
lengthen the lead to 6-4, and ran away with a 8-6 shoot-out. Coach
Harris commented on the win, "boy was that a rollercoaster ride. You
have to commened Bay State on never giving up, but on the flip side
of things, our boys never stopped competing and eventually fought
hard for these 2 points."
Harris went on to comment on the outstanding play of the Craig,
Newberg, Corey Callen line, as well as Garet Chumley and Andrew
Himelson, "the Newberg line was tremendous tonight, and along with
Himelson and Chumley have performed well all year, however it was
those veterans that put us over the top tonight." Glancing over the
box score Harris was right on as the Newberg line accrued 7 points
in the game, Chumley had 2 goals and 2 assists and Himelson scored
on the powerplay and also added a helper.
The Sunday afternoon game mirrored the Saturday night game somewhat
with the Hitmen jumping out to a 2-0 lead, only to squander it
giving up a powerplay and shorthanded tally, but continued to
compete scoring 2 goals in the final minute of the first period.
"Nick Geraci's goal (the eventual game-winner) was one of the best
goals I have seen in years at this level," said Coach Harris after
the victory. "He beat a forward, a defenseman, then went post to
post and tucked the puck by a sprawled out goaltender, it was truly
amazing!"
After the 6 first period goals things settled down and the
goaltenders took charge. As Ostergard and Lee combined for 59 saves
on 60 shots and the Hitmen skated to victory, 5-3, on an empty net
goal from Corey Callen. Again the line of Craig, Newberg and Callen
combined for six points and altogether 13 on the weekend, and
Himelson once again struck for 2 goals. Harris added, "The Newberg
line right now is playing their best hockey in two years, they have
really been our 'go to' line over the past two weeks. On top of that
the goaltending that we have gotten from Jon Morrow and Jonathan Lee
has been stupendous, and our blue line could not be any stronger
with Himelson, Ruikka, Day, Conte and youngster Kevin Clare stepping
right in."
The Hitmen travel to New Hampshire this weekend for the NH Jr
Monarchs Classic. On Friday the Hitmen will face off against the
Boston Jr Shamrocks for the first time in EJHL history. Saturday
pits the now undefeated Hitmen vs. the undefeated North leading
Syracuse Stars, and Sunday the Hitmen face off against arch rival,
Apple Core.
Hitmen crown the Kings
Hitmen
sit atop the southern
division after weekend
sweep
Wayne, NJ - After starting the
season with a strong
showing at the Boston Jr
Bruins showcase, the
Hitmen continued their
winning ways at home.
This past weekend the
Hitmen swept southern
division foe, South
Shore Kings, to remain
undefeated in league
play and perch
themselves atop the EJHL
southern division.
"I really liked how the
boys competed this
weekend," said Coach
Harris. "The Kings are
a gritty team, with a
lot of team speed, and
coach Jack Sweeney
always has them ready to
play." Harris went on to
say, "We called on our
vets this weekend to
step up and they did, I
was also very pleasantly
surprised with the
emergence of some
rookies."
With Des Moines
transfer, Ryan Ruikka,
out with an undisclosed
injury, and Hitmen iron
man, Kevin Miller out
with a dislocated
finger, the Hitmen were
short two very valuable
pieces of the puzzle.
However, rookies like,
Andrew Himelson, Will
Frederick, and Nick
Geraci picked up the
slack, and performed
very well in a larger
role.
"I think the difference
this weekend, and so far
this season has been
goaltending," coach
Harris commented. "Jon
Morrow has been
excellent this season,
and in year's past we
have done a lot of
'goaltending by
committee' but this
season Morrow has stood
tall in the cage. Along
with Morrow's splendid
play, which has landed
him in the top five in
nearly every EJHL
goaltending category,
Ryan Craig and Josh
Newberg had tremendous
weekends as they both
played hard and both
were credited with game
winning goals in the
four point Hitmen
weekend."
The Hitmen will now gear
up for a strong Bay
State team which will
pull into the Ice Vault
arena for the weekend.
"Bay State competes
hard, and always has a
roster full of junior
hockey veterans. The key
to victory this weekend
against the breakers
will be to match their
intensity and stick to
our game plan."
The Hitmen will face off
against Bay State on
Friday, October 6th at
6:15pm and then return
on Saturday, October 7th
at 12:15pm for the
second contest. Please

A
Good Day for the Knights
Hitmen
defenseman commits to
West Point
Wayne, NJ - The Jersey
Hitmen are proud to
announce their first
Division 1 signing of
the year as, Bill Day,
has committed to West
Point for the 2008-2009
season. Day, an AJHL
all-star last season
with the Washington
Nationals, made the jump
to the EJHL this season
and it has already paid
dividends.
"When I saw Billy at
camp this summer I knew
that he was a DI
defenseman," commented
coach Harris. "Not only
does he have tremendous
skill, but he is an
amazing student and
human being. Billy will
be an excellent addition
to the Black Knight
roster, and the Army is
lucky to have such a
bright and special
person committed to
them."
This season Day has
anchored an extremely
strong rearguard along
with division one
prospects, Ryan Ruikka,
Andrew Himelson and
Kevin Clare, all which
have already taken DI
campus visits. "It has
been a dream of mine to
attend West Point," Day
said. "I am so excited
for this amazing
opportunity."
Day and the Hitmen
travel to the Jr Bruins
shoot-out this weekend
where they will face-off
in league competition
against the New England
Jr Huskies (Friday at
9:40am), NH Jr Monarchs
(Friday at 7:20pm) and
finishing up with the
Green Mt Glades
(Saturday at 9:20am).
1st Annual
Hitmen Showcase a
Tremendous Success
Wayne, NJ - The Ice Vault
arena and Jersey Hitmen
put on their first
annual Jersey Hitmen
showcase last weekend
and it was a resounding
success. With over 20
colleges in attendance,
including Providence
College, Princeton
University, Northeastern
University, Dartmouth
University, A.I.C and
Manhattanville, the
coaches were treated to
some outstanding
hockey.
Headlining the
tournament were EJHL
powerhouses the Boston
Jr Bruins, Apple Core,
and the Jersey Hitmen,
combined with perennial
NAHL power Mahoning
Valley Phantoms. Teams
from the Empire, Met and
AJHL leagues were also
in attendance. Although
there were only 4 league
games played, two in the
MET league and two in
the Empire league, the
action was fast, hard
and furious.
"This was
a tremendous weekend for
junior hockey in New
Jersey," head coach,
Toby Harris, of the
Jersey Hitmen commented.
"For so long the top
players in Jersey were
told that they needed to
leave the state to be
seen, so many headed to
Canada or prep, but
after this weekend, many
saw what junior hockey
can bring to New Jersey.
This weekend was an
unprecedented success!"
Jr Bruins head coach,
and Jersey Hitmen owner,
Peter Masters commented,
"this facility is
undoubtedly second to
none in our league. The
Hitmen and Ice Vault
staff should be
commended on an
unbelievable weekend,
they left no stone
unturned, and their
professionalism did not
go unnoticed as many DI
scouts have already
committed to come back
next season."
On the
weekend, the EJHL fared
very well going a
combined, 6-2-1 with the
Boston Jr Bruins beating
the NY Bobcats and the
NJ Rockets (AJHL), and
the Jersey Hitmen
beating the NJ Rockets,
Pittsburgh Jr Penguins (EMJHL)
and tying the Mahoning
Valley Phantoms (NAHL).
Jersey Hitmen Capture
Eastern Showcase Title
04
August, 2007 by studio (EJHL

In
a classic battle between
two EJHL powerhouses,
the Jersey Hitmen
defeated New York Apple
Core (Green) by a score
of 3-2. In the end it
was a power-play tally
by Michael O’Brien with
6:32 remaining in the
game that made the
difference.
In a
classic battle between
two EJHL powerhouses,
the Jersey Hitmen
defeated New York Apple
Core (Green) by a score
of 3-2. In the end it
was a power-play tally
by Michael O’Brien
(Franklin Lakes, NJ)
with 6:32 remaining in
the game that made the
difference.
Leading up to that
game-winning goal, both
teams enjoyed solid
scoring chances
throughout the 30-minute
period. Apple Core was
the first to strike as
Nick Chiavetta
(Harrisburg, PA) made a
strong move down the
left wing and whipped a
shot past the stunned
netminder.
At the 20:11 mark and
with the referee’s arm
in the air signaling a
delayed penalty, the
Hitmen’s Will Frederick
(Allison Park, PA)
evened the contest when
he burst through neutral
ice and through several
Apple Core defenders to
deliver his second goal
of the tournament. Two
minutes later and with a
man advantage, the
Hitmen grabbed their
first lead of the game
when Cory Callen
(Annandale, NJ) slammed
home a loose puck in
front of the net.
Apple Core would not
relent, however, as
Jesse Lehman (Atlantic
Beach, NY) pounced on a
rebound in the right
face-off circle to tie
the game at 2-2 at the
13:20 mark.
Chiavetta would notch
the game winner less
than seven minutes later
to seal the victory for
his Hitmen squad. As
time dwindled off the
game clock, Apple Core
valiantly tried to even
the game and force extra
time but, in the end,
could not deliver any
late-game heroics.
How They Got to the
Finals…
Heading into that final
game, the Hitmen did not
have much time to enjoy
their 4-2 semifinal win
over the NH Jr Monarch
Empire team as they took
to the ice almost
immediately to face
Apple Core.
In that second semifinal
matchup, the Hitmen
jumped out to an early
2-0 lead courtesy of
tallies from Mark
Armstrong (Palm Harbor,
FL) and Ryan Craig
(Easton, MD). The
Monarchs, who were short
staffed for the
semifinal, battled back
and scored two straight
goals to even the
contest with just under
seven minutes remaining
in the game. It wasn’t
until Nick Geraci (Old
Bridge, NJ) picked a
perfect time to notch
his first goal of the
tournament, off a feed
from Chris Zaires
(Aberdeen, NJ). Zaires
went on to add an empty
netter with just two
ticks left on the clock
to seal the 4-2 victory.
In the first semifinal
contest, it was New York
Apple Core (Green) which
topped the Jr Titans by
a score of 5-0. Jaka
Ankerst (Slovenia) put
the New York squad on
the board first with his
second goal of the
tournament just three
minutes into the
30-minute period. Billy
Crinnion (Bayville, NY),
Greg Ciciola (Yorktown
Heights, NY), Roberts
Burkarts (Latvia) and
Sean Escobedo (Bayside,
NY) also scored in the
5-0 victory.
Apple Core secured its
spot in the semifinals
after posting three
victories over the
course of four days. The
team posted 17 goals and
allowed only five to
claim the White Division
title over the
also-undefeated Boston
Jr Bruins (White).

Coach Harris takes over helm!
Three year assoicate head coach
and recuriting director bumped to head coach of the
Hitmen
Wayne, NJ -
At last months final Hitmen camp GM Peter
Masters and Head Coach Jim Hunt announced to the returning
players that this season Toby Harris will be taking over the
Hitmen as the head coach. This flip flop in responsibilities
(Jim will stay on as associate head coach) was born out
of coach Hunt's new position with the 2008 US world Junior
team. Earlier this summer Jim was named as an assistant
coach for the US team. "What a great honor for Jim and the
Hitmen to have it's head coach be named to such a lofty
position in the hockey world. This job is hard to get and I
am very jealous. I know Jim loves working with the US
national team so this should be a special year for him and
the Hitmen" said GM masters of Hunts appointment. Because Jim's responsibilities have
increased beyond the capacity of him being able to
devote his full attention to the Hitmen, as he has done in
the past, he approached Peter Masters with his concerns."I
in fact don't know how much I will be around the team the
first half of the season. I am sure I will make most of the
practices but right now it is up in the air with my
responsibilities to the World junior team where I will be
each weekend. I might be with the Hitmen or I might be on
the road scouting for the US team," said coach Hunt. Because
of the instability in his schedule and the job coach Harris
has done over the years recruiting and growing as new coach
both Peter Masters and Jim hunt agreed that it would be best
for coach Harris to take over the ship. "I am very grateful to get this
opportunity. Jim has been a great teacher for me and mentor.
I know he is going to be around more than he thinks and will
be a big part of what goes on day to day and long term with
team. I look forward to working with him and the great bunch
of guys we have coming in this year. This also makes
rooting for the US team even more fun now that we know we
have one of our own helping to build a gold medal winner,"
said coach Harris.
Good luck to the Hitmen and the US world
junior team.
